Different interpreting modes for different settings: which one is best for you?

SIMULTANEOUS

 

Simultaneous interpreting can be used for international conferences, media launches, TV or radio broadcasts.

 

interpreters, sitting in a booth with headsets and a microphone, hear what is being said in the source language in the conference room. They convey the interpreted version simultaneously in the microphone to the clients who are sitting in the conference room. There are two interpreters per booth who will relay each other every 20 to 30 minutes.

A tour-guide system can also be used for this service. In that case, the interpreters are present in the conference room.

CONSECUTIVE

This service can be used for small to medium-sized gatherings; it can also be adapted to larger audiences with the help of a microphone and speakers.

 

The interpreter listens to what is being said in the source language and takes notes. The speaker pauses for thought which allows the interpreter to convey the interpreted version in the target language to the clients. Equipment is not needed for this interpreting mode.

LIAISON

 

Liaison interpreting is bidirectional and is used in business and diplomatic meetings, official visits or informal conversations.

 

The interpreter mediates in a conversation between two persons or more who don’t speak each other’s language. She sits in the middle. Interventions from clients  remain short in order to avoid long periods of interpretation and to ensure a natural flow to the conversation. This service can also be called bilateral or dialogue interpreting.

CHUCHOTAGE

 

It is used in various settings such as business meetings, lunches, dinners, receptions, conferences and trials.

 

The interpreter sits or stands next to the client for whom she is interpreting and whispers the interpreted version of what is being said in the source language. With the interpretation being whispered, this service can only be provided for one or two clients or delegates at the same time.
